POST-MATCH INTERVIEW with Keith Millen – Vs. Deal Town

Croydon Athletic Manager Keith Millen Reflects on Narrow Loss to Deal Town

Croydon Athletic fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat against Deal Town in their latest league encounter. Manager Keith Millen shared his thoughts post-match, expressing disappointment at the outcome despite moments of promise from his side. “We started well in the first half,” said Millen. “There were some good moments and decent play, but we lacked that final bit of quality in the attacking third. Overall, I was quite pleased with the first 45 minutes.”

Croydon took the lead through a well-taken goal by David early in the second half. Millen highlighted the importance of that moment: “When you go 1-0 up, you think it’s an opportunity to push on. We created two really good chances to score a second goal, and if we had taken one, I think the game would’ve been over.” However, Deal Town turned the tide with a relentless attacking approach in the final 30 minutes, which Millen acknowledged his team struggled to handle. “Fair play to Deal; they committed men forward and kept playing positively. We found it hard to cope with the pressure,” he admitted.

The equalizer shifted the momentum, and Croydon’s struggles culminated in conceding a second goal, which Millen described as avoidable. “It wasn’t good play by them—it was purely our own mistakes. From a position where we were in control, we suddenly found ourselves 2-1 down.” Millen also noted how the late stages of the match saw his players battle frustration and anxiety, which impacted their performance. “We had a couple of half-chances near the end to salvage something, but it wasn’t enough.”

Reflecting on the result, the manager emphasized the importance of game management and decision-making. “When you’re 1-0 up, you don’t expect to lose, but I think we can be a bit naive at times. Good decisions win games, and bad decisions cost you—that was the story today.” Millen highlighted the challenges of not training daily, which limits opportunities to develop his players’ decision-making. “It’s not an excuse, but we don’t have the luxury of full-time training like higher-level teams. Coaching players through these moments consistently isn’t possible at this level, but we need to find ways to improve.”

Despite the setback, Millen remains optimistic about the squad’s potential. “We have talented players, and that gives us great moments in games. But talent alone doesn’t win matches. We need to balance skill with discipline and a better understanding of what’s required to get results.” The Rams will look to bounce back in their next fixture, with Millen determined to turn lessons learned into progress on the pitch.
