Keith Millen: The Interview

Croydon Athletic fans, meet your new manager, Keith Millen! A local lad with a rich footballing pedigree, Millen brings experience, passion, and a deep connection to the Croydon area as he takes charge of The Rams. Ahead of his debut match against Three Bridges at Mayfield Stadium on 23rd November, we take a closer look at Keith’s impressive career and his vision for the club.

A Journey Rooted in Football

Keith Millen’s love for football began in Croydon, where he grew up playing the game that would shape his life. His dedication earned him an apprenticeship with Brentford, where he enjoyed a decade-long playing career before moving on to Watford and Bristol City. Over 650 professional appearances later, Millen transitioned seamlessly into coaching, quickly rising through the ranks to become Bristol City’s manager.
From there, his career flourished, with roles at Blackpool, MK Dons, and most notably, Crystal Palace, where he assisted Ian Holloway in securing promotion to the Premier League. Millen spent four years in the top flight, gaining invaluable experience and forming connections with the likes of Wilfried Zaha and Danny Young, key figures in Croydon Athletic’s current setup.

Balancing Coaching and Mentorship

Most recently, Keith has taken on the role of coach educator with the FA and the PFA, mentoring the next generation of football coaches. While he enjoys guiding aspiring managers, his passion for hands-on coaching remains strong. This dual role allows him to stay current with the game while bringing fresh insights to Croydon Athletic.

Why Croydon Athletic?

Millen’s return to Croydon is no coincidence. The club’s ambitious project, driven by co-owners Wilfried Zaha and Stormzy, aligns perfectly with his values. “This area is part of my upbringing,” he explains. “Working with people like Danny and Wilf, who are passionate about making a difference, is a big attraction for me.”

The players themselves were also a significant draw. Having worked with several of them at Crystal Palace, Millen is eager to help them develop their skills further. “There’s talent here that could progress to higher levels,” he says. “If they succeed, the team succeeds.”

A Bold Vision for The Rams

Millen’s philosophy is simple: attack with purpose and play to the team’s strengths. With a squad brimming with attacking talent, he wants Croydon Athletic to be a team that excites fans and plays on the front foot. “Why not get the best out of the players we have?” he asks. “I want us to be attacking, to enjoy our football, and for the fans to enjoy watching us.”

While he acknowledges the challenges of managing at this level, such as varying pitch conditions, Millen is confident in his ability to adapt and deliver success. His focus is on creating a winning mentality while balancing entertaining football with practical tactics.

Looking Ahead

Keith Millen’s arrival marks a new chapter for Croydon Athletic. With his vast experience, local roots, and commitment to developing players, he’s poised to lead the club to new heights. His message to fans is clear: “I want to enjoy coming to work and coaching talented players. Hopefully, we can all have a great journey together.”

As the team prepares for Millen’s debut match, there’s a buzz of excitement around Mayfield Stadium. The Rams are ready to charge forward under their new manager, and fans are encouraged to come along, support the team, and be part of this thrilling journey. #UpTheRams
