Match Report: Croydon Athletic Women 1-1 Sporting Duet
Croydon Athletic Women hosted Sporting Duet at Mayfield Stadium with hopes of maintaining their unbeaten league record. The match got off to an exciting start, with Croydon coming close within the first moments as a shot sailed just over the bar from kick-off. It was a fast-paced opening half, with both teams creating opportunities. However, solid defending at both ends kept the scoreline level. Croydon’s best chance came when the Sporting Duet goalkeeper made a brave intervention, rushing out to charge down an effort that looked destined for the back of the net.
Sporting Duet almost took the lead midway through the first half after being awarded a free kick on the edge of the Croydon box. The resulting strike looked to be heading into the net, but a stunning save from the Croydon keeper denied them, keeping the scores level.
The deadlock was broken shortly after, however, when Sporting Duet intercepted a pass in Croydon’s half and played a precise ball through the defence. Quellennec-Reid was on hand to smartly finish at the near post, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Despite the setback, Croydon’s heads did not drop, and they continued to press for an equaliser in the second half. They came close early on with a well-worked cut-back after the break, but no one could get on the end of it. The equaliser arrived soon after when Kabadaki was found on the left flank by D’Aranjo. The Croydon forward powered past a defender, cutting inside before unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net, bringing the score to 1-1.
Sporting Duet remained a threat, but as the game progressed, Croydon grew in confidence. They looked for a winner, with a series of dangerous corners that either flashed past the post or were bravely cleared by the Sporting defence. The Rams also hit the upright with a long-range strike just before the full-time whistle.
In the end, the game finished 1-1, with Croydon maintaining their unbeaten run in the league. A solid performance overall, as the team looks forward to their next challenge.
Next up, Croydon Athletic Women will host South London Reserves in the Capital Women’s Cup on 19th January at Mayfield Stadium.
